Choosing a Safe House in Your Neighborhood
Before becoming enamored with homes you would like to purchase, check out the neighborhood. This is especially true if you are moving to an unfamiliar area. Look to the local police for crime statistics and if there is a prison nearby. The Chamber of Commerce is another good resource. Your broker can provide demographic statistics as well. Once you are comfortable that you are in your preferred area, you can start looking into the school system and riding the neighborhood to ascertain the homes are maintained to your satisfaction.
Now you are ready to grab a notepad and start viewing the individual homes. Make sure to write down the pros and cons to address your safety concerns. Is there a security system present? Note how many doors lead outside, how visible they are and check the locking systems. And, do not forget about the windows. Look around for fire extinguishers, smoke detectors and if the home has upper levels check how far it is to the ground.
Once you have all the important facts covered concerning the family’s safety, go ahead and enjoy the aesthetics of your possible new dream home.
